Stylite Designs was started by Donal during
the early 80’s while still in college. Donal and some of his friends had
problems getting appropriately sized wheelchairs. Most wheelchairs are based on
a standard shape, with models varying only by scaling up and down, this didn’t
suite wide short people or narrow long people.
Donal worked on the idea of designing the
component parts of his chair like LEGO™ blocks, with many interchangeable parts.

• 3 side frames lengths,
• 10 folding widths,
• 3 hanger angels,
• 2 armrest styles,
• 2 backrest styles,
• 4 wheel options.
This gave the client 3x10x3x2x2x4=1440 combinations,
all were black and at a set all in price.
Clients needing a 13”wide by 17” depth
chair paid the same as 17” wide by 13” depth chair.
No chairs we pre-built so the client got
the options they needed not what we had to sell.
The next big change was to integrate
posture management as an integral part of the wheelchair. At the time slung
canvas seats with whoopee cushions seem to rule the day. Breaking with the established
norms once again Donal issued all Freewheeler
wheelchairs with timber based foam cushions,
Today Stylite Designs offer:
